PVM’s Annual Village Victory Cup is such a wonderful event. It is a day I hope never to miss. It brings me so much joy- Thank you donors!

What is the PVM Village Victory Cup? If you don’t know, please allow me to explain because you’re REALLY missing out on something special.

Village Victory Cup is an annual competition between PVM Villages. Over 300+ residents compete in an assortment of events from balloon volleyball, hoop shoot to cooking/writing contests. The entire room is filled with energy and excitement as each team seeks to bring home the coveted cup to their Village. There is also a spirit contest with lots of fun customs and hippest cheerleaders you’ll ever see! 

The Victory Cup is so much more than just a one day competition. It is being part of team and making new friends year around. Visit a Village and I bet you’ll see residents practicing (most likely wearing their team colors!). 

I have had the honor of being the MC for many years. I have witnessed residents moved to tears after a win, maybe their first win in their life? Several have even been buried with their medals. The Village Victory Cup means so much to both residents and staff.

Because you donated, there is a Village Victory Cup. This event is 100% funded by caring donors to the PVM Foundation. Thank you!

Nov. 19th marked the date of PVM’s 75th Anniversary Un-Gala. The goal was to have a celebration of 75 years in the making and raise $150,000 to purchase PPE. The celebration was different than first planned by going virtual (aka the un-gala) but it was an event to remember. Not only did we celebrate our Residents, Staff and Donors, but the un-gala raised $158,000…that was $8,000 over the goal! Thank you to our caring and generous donors for making it happen!

During the Un-Gala we heard about some of the wonderful people that helped build PVM into 32 locations throughout Lower Michigan. For example, Clarence D. Sterling started it all off with the first donation to purchase the land at The Village of Redford in 1945. During the event, current Village board member Karin Flint told the story of how her mother got the Village of Hillside and Perry Farm of Harbor Springs built after learning of a friend who had no place to live as a senior adult. 75 years of celebrations just like Karin’s were shared.

At the center of PVM’s Mission is always the older adult and the talents of a few were highlighted during the evening. The Un-Gala had David Simpson, a resident at Thome Rivertown of Detroit, providing the entertainment with his two sons with a great rendition of Earth, Wind and Fire’s “September”. Also Alberta Schuler from The Village of Westland was the bartender for the night, pouring a festive cocktail. What a perfect way to kick off a party with a tasty beverage!

The event was capped off with a $5,000 lottery drawing from over 900 tickets. The lucky winner was the daughter of a resident at The Village of East Harbor. She is having a Merry Christmas!

PVM’s 75th Anniversary Gala was night to celebrate. Thank you for attending, donating and making PVM the organization that we are today and as Former Mayor of Detroit Dennis Archer said in his opening remarks, “Here’s to the next 75 years!”

His gift to buy the land at The Village of Redford–now almost 75 years ago, is the reason PVM is here today. When I think about that, I’m amazed. What an incredible legacy that now reaches over 5,000 older adults!

Clarence Sterling was a very special individual, and so are YOU. Every donor does so much good.

With 13 million veterans 55 or older*, PVM developed a program to put veterans first. No wait lists, all vets jump to the front of the line if they’re looking for housing. A simple act of gratitude.

PVM Foundation’s Gala fell on Veterans Day a few years ago. It was such a privilege to honor Will Henderson, a past resident at PVM’s Our Saviour’s Manor of Westland. He shared how PVM saved his life.

As I met with you the donor, I see your smiles when I mention PVM’s Veteran’s Preference Program. Your thoughtful donations have given so many vets like Will a place to call home. A Veterans Day Tribute! Thank you.

7.8 million children in the U.S. live in households headed by their grandparents or an older adult relative.*

My first reaction to those numbers: “Wow! How could that be?” Then I thought, I have two neighbors that raised other relatives’ children. Players on my son’s football team, students in my wife’s classroom – the same theme, over and over again.

This reflects a breakdown of the nuclear family. There are many reasons why. No need to list them. But what would happen without grandparents stepping up?! Scary!

We celebrated National Grandparents Day on Sept. 8. Thank you, donors, for contributing in honor of grandparents. They deserve it!

Now, back to that hug. I would say it has evolved into a big, big bear hug of thanks! Thank you, grandparents, for being there for 7.8 million children in need.
