I was a newer member of the Board of Presbyterian Villages of Michigan and was particularly interested in what we were doing for seniors in the City of Detroit. I arranged for a visit to our then newer Village of Brush Park Manor Paradise Valley. In addition to touring this impressive facility, I sat down with several residents to hear from them how they were finding the Village.

I gave them a little of my background but told them I really wanted to hear about them and their life in the Village. Immediately one gentleman looked at me and said, “Mr. Peterson, you don’t understand. Until I moved here, I lived several blocks from here in an old apartment building. The building was not safe, I had several locks on my door, there was crime in the neighborhood and gangs in the area. I was afraid to go outside. Here I am safe, I have a beautiful apartment, wonderful neighbors and everything I need. This is the nicest place I’ve ever lived.”

That made a lasting impression on me which continues to remind me of the positive difference PVM is making every day on the lives of the thousands of seniors we serve around Michigan.”

Bob’s experiences, like that, over the years have inspired him and his wife, Sue, to include PVM in their estate plan.

“We want to help ensure that PVM will always provide quality housing and compassionate services for older adults. It brings us joy to know our commitment will help future generations find not just housing but a true home.”

But, her family’s legacy at the Village goes back to the very beginning. Elaine’s mom, Mildred, moved to VEH in 1978. She was one of the very first residents to call the Village home. Mildred had a wonderful life at VEH for 22 years before her passing in 2000.

In 2012, Elaine followed in her mom’s footsteps and made VEH her home. She moved to the community because it offered peace of mind. It’s about the security, the support, and the friendships she’s made. “Knowing that if I run into any kind of a problem – physical, mental, financial, along the way, there will be support for me from the Village.”

In 2016, Elaine joined the PVM Legacy Society when she informed the PVM Foundation that a gift to PVM was included in her Will. Her gift would be a percentage of her estate. Elaine and her late husband wanted to share whatever remained in the estate with their three children, their church, and PVM.

Elaine would like her gift to support the VEH Benevolence Fund. She became aware of the Village’s Benevolence Fund because her mom benefited from it. For the first twenty years, Mildred was fine with the limited resources she had. However, when she needed to move to Assisted Living, the costs increased, and her resources depleted. The fund helped support Mildred’s needs for the last few months of her life.

Elaine said “knowing that my mom was not going to be asked to leave was a great relief.”

Thank you Elaine for leaving a legacy and remembering PVM’s Village of East Harbor in your Will.

A CGA offers a win-win for PVMF and you, the donor. You give donation to the Foundation in exchange for long-term fixed income. Who doesn’t want income for life?

Why should you care about creating an estate plan? Think of it as a written game plan for your legacy. It’s a powerful way to protect your loved ones and support the causes that are near and dear to your heart.

If you have not already made a will, now is the time. Here are a few online resources to check out: freewill.com, legalzoom.com, trustandwill.com.

Common myths about making estate plans:

It’s too early for me to think about my will!

It is never too early to start planning ahead. Whether you are eighteen or eighty, having a will can give you peace of mind that your wishes, your loved ones, and your favorite causes are taken care of, no matter what.

I wrote my will a couple of years ago so I’m set.

Life changes fast, so it’s recommended that you review/update your will at least every five years.

Estate planning is only for wealthy people.

Estate planning is for everyone. Do you have assets? A savings plan through your employer—even if it’s only $500? A checking or savings account and/or meaningful personal possessions? Those are all assets. You can create a simple will to determine who should receive them.

In addition to protecting those you love, there is a powerful way you can support Presbyterian Villages of Michigan in your estate plans that will cost you nothing during your lifetime — making a gift in your will. You can create possibilities for future generations of older adults. Now that’s a legacy! Click here to learn more about creating your legacy with PVM.

Tom Kimble spent a majority of his career at General Motors in finance. After he retired his 2nd Act began… a life of volunteering his time, talents and treasurers to SE MI nonprofits. The majority of his efforts centered on older adults.

As chair of AARP Michigan, he was the keynote speaker at a PVM Foundation Gala. From that point on he became more and more involved with PVM. He serves on the PVM Foundation Board. A few years ago he and his wife, Diandria, co-chaired the PVM Foundation Gala- yes the same Gala he spoke at years before.

In 2020 the Kimbles decided to leave a bequest for PVM. “My charge is to have every older adult live with dignity and purpose. No one can do this better than PVM,” Tom proclaims.

As a man of color, Tom feels leaving a bequest for the future is very important for several reasons. “African American older adults need quality places to live that are truly affordable. PVM is the organization that is doing it now and will in the future. I also want to be a role model for my children to be philanthropic and support the future of PVM,” says Tom.

Thank you the Kimbles for believing in PVM. The Kimbles’ bequest will ensure quality faith based senior living for every older adult for years to come.

Kudos to a wonderful 2nd act! Please consider your 2nd act by leaving a bequest to PVM.

…Connects Randall & Susan Miller to PVM

A conversation after church about PVM was life-changing. Here’s how Randall and Susan Miller developed a deep affection for the PVM Mission, and why they decided to leave PVM in their will.

“I did not have any connection to PVM. We were new in town,” Susan recalls. “After church, current PVM Board Member, Wes Pelling, leaned over the pew and asked if I was interested in serving on the newly forming Village of Redford Board. I answered, ‘why not?’”

That simple ask led to Susan Miller serving for many years as a PVM Board Member, including two years leading the organization as PVM Corporate Board Chair. “When I started, PVM had five Villages and now we have so many, I think I have lost count! I am amazed. Very proud,” Susan proclaims.

Randall and Susan made the easy decision to leave a bequest in their will to PVM. Bequest donors like the Millers helped PVM serve seniors for 75 years, and ensure that PVM is around for another 75 years.

“I believe in PVM and love what PVM does. This is why leaving a bequest to PVM made so much sense,” says Susan.

PVM would not be able to serve over 5,000 older adults without kind people like Randall and Susan Miller. Their bequest offers a brighter tomorrow for older adults. Thank you Millers!

A Caring Soul…

A caring soul indeed! Gene cared deeply for older adults, especially those at The Village of East Harbor in Chesterfield Twp.

During his lifetime Gene established the Kleemann Help Fund to support residents and staff in their time of need. He also honored his parents with the naming of The Karl & Frieda Kleemann Chapel at East Harbor.

Gene passed on December 19, 2019. His memorial was in the Kleemann Chapel. Ironically the same place where he was married just a few years earlier (at the young age of 92!).

Before his passing, Gene kindly left PVM in his will. His bequest is a gift for future residents, to ensure a bright tomorrow for generations to come.

Gene’s life was a blessing to many. PVM is so grateful of his caring nature. His legacy will live on and touch so many.

God bless you Gene Kleemann!

Building a Bright Future for Seniors!

Giving back has always been part of Henry Johnson’s life philosophy. Even in his twenty-plus years as a vice president at the University of Michigan, the first African-American to hold an administrative position there, Johnson always found time to volunteer.

By the time he’d gotten involved with PVM and the PVM Foundation, he’d already served on numerous non-profit boards. With a background in social work, Johnson knew his stuff. And he recognized the crucial work PVM was doing.

“One of the things that really hooked me with PVM was the range of services for seniors – not just in terms of housing specifically, but the accompanying services that go with it,” Johnson

says. “I thought, ‘This is an organization that isn’t just limited to the well-to-do. It covers a range of socio-economic needs of seniors.’”

Because Johnson’s wife, Billie, leads the Area Office on Aging of Northwestern Ohio, he knows the challenges seniors face as they enter their twilight years. And as board member of both PVM and the PVM Foundation, he feels strongly “that anybody who serves on the board should make an ongoing commitment while they’re alive – not only after they pass, but while they’re serving on the board.”

That’s why the Johnsons chose to include the PVM Foundation in Henry’s will. And why he encourages others to do the same.

“There’s a phrase that we use in our church: ‘Come and seek,’” says Johnson, a member of First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor. “Visit PVM and get a tour and talk to the residents. Come and see what those dollars, no matter how expansive or limited they might be, can do.”
